SCHEME FOR FILLING VACANCIES IN HONG KONG BY MEN OF THE 2ND BATTALION, THE KING'S OWN SCOTTISH BORDERERS, FROM POONA, INDIA.
139
The 2nd Battalion The King's Own Scottish Borderers are leaving behind thirty three men who have been discharged from the Regiment to take up employment in Hong Kong.
This most satisfactory result has far exceeded the hopes of the Committee in the Regiment responsible for this work, and they feel deeply indebted for the sympathy, help and kindness they have received from H.E. the Officer Administering the Government, The Inspector General of Police and many others in Hong Kong without whose help such a result would have been quite impossible.
Such a result means a tremendous lot to the Regiment. Not only have thirty three men got very good jobs in Hong Kong, but there are thirty three less men to be thrown on the already overcrowded labour market at home.
The Hong Kong Government have set up a Committee under the very able Chairmanship of the Hon. Mr. E.D.C. Wolfe to consider the question of the future employment of ex-soldiers in Hong Kong and to organise a system for their future employment in the Colony.
The work of this Committee is certain to have far reaching results in the Army, and it is felt that the Government of Hong Kong are, through this Committee, setting a practical example of what can be done to help with the exceedingly difficult National problem of the reinstatement of the ex- soldier into civil life.
This Battalion have, through this Committee,
registered men who are due for discharge within the next twelve months with;
The Hong Kong Police.
The Hong Kong Warders, and other Government Departments.
They have also registered men with;
The Chinese Maritime Customs. The Dockyard Police.
The Regimental Committee hope that as vacancies occur in Hong Kong which could be filled by the men who are registered, the Heads of Departments concerned will notify the Hong Kong Government Committee who will cable or write to P.R.I., 2nd Bn. The King's Own Scottish Borderers, Poona, India, stating which man they could take and when they want him.
The question of the passage expenses from India is at present unsettled, but that will be gone into as soon as the Battalion arrive at Poona, and the Hong Kong Committee notified.
Mr. T. Parkinson is acting as the Battalion representative in Hong Kong, and any questions on the matter can be referred to him at the Harbour Department.
